How to Measure for a Bust Adjustment
Learn how to take accurate high bust and full bust measurements for FBA and SBA calculations.
How to Measure for a Bust Adjustment
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a well-fitting garment. This guide shows you exactly how to take the two measurements that determine whether you need a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) or a Small Bust Adjustment (SBA).
What You'll Need
- A flexible measuring tape (not a metal one)
- A well-fitting, non-padded bra (the bra you'll wear with the finished garment)
- A friend to help (recommended but not required)
- A mirror
Measurement 1: High Bust
The high bust measurement captures your rib cage width without the bust fullness.
Where to Measure
Place the tape above your bust, under your arms. The tape should:
- Go straight across the back at the level of your underarms
- Come around the front just above where your bust begins
- Sit snugly but not tight — you should be able to slip a finger under the tape
Common Mistakes
- Too low: If the tape dips down over the bust at all, you'll get a number that's too large
- Too tight: Pulling the tape tight will give a falsely small measurement
- Arms down: Keep your arms relaxed at your sides while someone reads the tape
Typical Range
Women's high bust measurements typically range from 76 to 120 cm (30 to 47 inches).
Measurement 2: Full Bust
The full bust measurement captures the widest point of your bust.
Where to Measure
Place the tape at the fullest point of your bust. The tape should:
- Go straight across the back (same height as for your bra band)
- Come around the front at the fullest point of the bust
- Be parallel to the floor all the way around
- Sit snugly but not tight
Common Mistakes
- Tape drooping at back: Have someone check that the tape is level all the way around
- Wrong bra: Always measure in the bra you'll sew the garment for
- Breathing in: Breathe normally — don't hold your breath or puff out your chest
Typical Range
Women's full bust measurements typically range from 80 to 140 cm (31 to 55 inches).
Understanding Your Bust Differential
The bust differential is: Full Bust − High Bust.
| Differential | What It Means | |:------------|:-------------| | 0–5 cm (0–2") | Standard range — your pattern should fit without a bust adjustment | | 5–10 cm (2–4") | You likely need a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) | | Greater than 10 cm (4"+) | You definitely need an FBA — consider a large FBA technique | | Negative (full bust < high bust) | Re-measure — this usually means the tape was in the wrong position |
Tips for Accuracy
- Measure twice: Take each measurement twice and use the average
- Same time of day: Body measurements can change slightly throughout the day
- Write it down: Record your measurements immediately
- Re-measure seasonally: Bodies change — re-measure every 3-6 months
